Why TaprooT?
As plants have taproots that burrow deeply into the earth to discover & deliver water & nutrients to the entire plant, so too do we have taproots! Yes, each person has a taproot that connects us to our deeper selves, our true selves wherein dwells creativity & healing, all the ingredients we need to live happy, healthy, & holy lives.
However, our world today is not always a friendly environment in which to grow. Competition, self-indulgence, greed, materialism - to name a few factors - have brought about a blindness & an insensitivity to the interdependence of the universe. This disconnect has resulted in generations immersed in war within themselves & among themselves. Pollution, global warming, the disappearance of multitudinous species of plants & animals are but symptoms of this disconnect.
It is in the fate & the faces of our children that we see the horrific effects of our disconnect. It has been postulated that the health of a culture can be ascertained by observing the health of its children. If this be the case, we are a culture in crisis. The bodies, minds & spirits of our children cry out for love, for peace, for safety, for meaning.
As a lifetime educator, I have observed the demise of our most precious resource, our children. They are truly endangered in our world. Technology, athletics, materialism, obesity and intense competition have robbed our children of innocence, curiosity, free play, & a sense of personal worth & well-being. I believe that children are resilient & have within them the power to heal. I believe that immersion in free play, in art, in music & in nature reconnects children to their spiritual flow of energy, to their deeper inner selves.As a lifetime educator, I have taught, counseled, & been an administrator within the school systems from pre-school through high school. I have innovated curricula & delivery systems within traditional school systems with some success. However, it is my firm conviction that the changes needed for children to thrive in mind, body & spirit are beyond the scope & imagination of traditional school systems. As long as systems continue to herd children through regimented, lock step, graded curricula & environments of teaching to test, most children will survive but few will truly thrive.
TaprooT connects children to THE SOURCE of creativity & healing through art, music & nature. Children explore their inner world through observation of their outer world & personal expression. Yoga, meditation, watercolor, song, musical instruments, gardening, nature walks, journaling, finger painting, composting, acrylic, chalk - whatever the medium - children enjoy free play & unique personal expression while learning invaluable life skills. TaprooT creates a safe space for children to reflect & appreciate, to create and heal, to nurture & be nurtured.
